I’ve been practicing yoga since 2004, ever since I discovered I was pregnant with my first child. I now have two children who like to practice along side me. As difficult as it sounds to have children stretched out on your mat while in headstand, I have learned how valuable this time we spend together is. I don’t view my practice of yoga as a serene, quiet, and idyllic place where there are no distractions. Instead, I practice in a chaotic, loud, and perfectly lovely mess that I call real life. There is a saying that we like to tell our students: “Take your practice off the mat” or in other words into real life. While I still agree with this as being a useful slogan to remind students of the intention of yoga, I like to say to parents who practice, “Take your mat into real life”.
I began teaching in late 2007. After completing a 300 hr yoga teacher training diploma with Colin Hall and Sarah Garden, I traveled to India with Pam, Fabian, Nicole, and others to learn and practice other styles of yoga. I have also studied with David McAmmond and Dr. Nivedita Pingle, who has played a major roll in my anatomy and physiology training. I continue to receive training in all the areas that I teach and probably always will. Our bodies are always changing along with our thoughts and feelings. I believe our yoga practice should change along with us.
